Previously in conventional corn and soy for decades, this land needed serious remediation. We’ve been hiring a friend to mow the grass twice each season, so that noxious weeds (thistle!!! does it ever end?!?! ahhhh!!!) don’t go to seed and continue to spread. We aren’t in the market to buy a big tractor, because we don’t need one for cultivating our veggies, so hiring someone with a commercial mower was the right option for us. The swath (as the pros call it, apparently) after mowing, is still a bit patchy, but everything we planted is there and filling in the gaps. We’re in a position to now keep it mowed on our own, mowing every other week to keep the grass healthy. We’re working with several organizations to get trees planted in the field (hopefully in Spring 2026), in tidy rows that will provide a shady canopy for the inevitable rotational grazing that we’re planning for once the pasture is healthy enough to feed small livestock. Stay tuned! This means some of them may have to ripen on your counter for a few days, but we think its better than broken, sticky tomatoes! It’s a life changing hack - especially if you want your cukes to soak up a marinade more effectively. I cut off the ends, peel stripes from the skin, put the whole cukes into a plastic bag (just a scrap grocery bag we have lying around, which I will throw away after this), and wail on it with a rolling pin until pieces are just a little bigger than bite size. If you have stress management issues, this is a good after-work exercise! Dump the smashed cucumbers into a colander and salt them and wait for about 15 minutes, turning with your hands every so often, to drain excess moisture. Mix into your favorite salad. *This is not the recipe posted, its a version with yogurt and green garlic and rice vinegar and cilantro that I made up. Place turnips cut side down once the pan is hot. Cover. Let cook for 10-15 minutes and try to resist moving them around (you want them to brown). The steam will cook the inside of the turnips while the heat will brown the outside. After 15 minutes, give them a poke with a fork. If you can easily pierce them and the bottom is crispy, they’re done. If not, continuing cooking while covered. If they’re soft but not brown, take the cover off and turn up the heat a little until they get crispy. Each beet seed is 3 plants, so they tend to get crowded. We transplanted them this year, separating each plant and planting at 4 inches. Row cover season is upon us. All these gorgeous greens, unfortunately, need to be covered at all times to protect them from the cabbage moth, whose larvae will eat the leaves down to the stem if left alone with the plants. This entire tunnel is planted to plants in the brassica family, which fall prey to the caterpillars. We opted to grow curly kale this fall because I have a theory that the caterpillars have a harder time traversing the curly leaves than the smooth leave of lacinato. Because we have to dig potatoes to harvest them, it is always the case that we missed some the previous year and that the forgotten ones will sprout the following season. Since onions get planted about a month earlier than potatoes, the forgotten potatoes sprouted, which are a target for the dreaded Colorado Potato Beetle - a major pest that can mow down potato plants in a week. The beetles laid their eggs on the old potatoes, which we weeded and squished the eggs before they hatched, and now our actual potato plants have no signs of beetle eggs. One very special thing about Greg is that his grandparents lived in our house and farmed on our land for decades, and it was unoccupied for about 20 years until we moved here. Also, a special shoutout goes to his wife, Rosa, who, more often than not, sends Greg with homemade baked goods for us on harvest day. We know if Greg is five minutes late, its because he will be arriving with warm cookies or a sweet loaf :) Amelia: Amelia brings their curiosity to every harvest day, wanting to learn more about soil, plants, and raising chickens. They are a great person to do a one-on-one harvest with, sure to keep the conversation interesting. We’ve discovered that Amelia makes beautiful bunches of basil, cilantro, and kale this season! Judy: Oh Judy, what a boss! This is Judy’s second season with us, and she knows her way around the farm. Judy is reliable, not afraid to ask questions, and always down for joking around. Another honorable mention is Lisa, Judy’s wife, who comes to harvest occasionally and is also known to send treats. Matt: Matt is taking this photo, so you can’t seen him. The three beds on her left were tomatoes last week, but they’ve been transitioned to spinach. It’s tough call to decide when to terminate a tomato bed, but this is how we make the decision: Our tomatoes produce gorgeous, delicious tomatoes for a month. After that, quality and flavor start to decrease, and production slows. Because we have such a short growing season, in order to have spinach in October and November, we need to have it seeded by September. If we kept those tomatoes growing, we’d have sub-par tomatoes for only about more more weeks and we’d miss the window for having spinach. With the dry weather, aphid pressure has been intense! There’s not much we can do about aphids; they reproduce rapidly and cling to the underside of leaves which makes shaking them off almost futile. They don’t eat much, but they create a black resin that is sticky and messy, so plants with delicate leaves are the most vulnerable. Luckily these peppers are pretty hardy. We’re now starting to see TONS of ladybugs and their larvae all over the peppers, who eat hundreds of aphids a day. Ladybugs are the best way to get rid of aphids, so we kind of wait around for them to start showing up and do their thing. Here is a video of a ladybug larvae eating aphids. This romaine, the salad mix, bok choy, spinach, and turnip greens all bounced back from being frozen and taste even sweeter for it. These cool weather crops are pretty amazing and will only be able to handle a couple weeks worth of freezes and thaws before their integrity is compromised, which is why we don’t grow any later than November! During the warm months, we harvest early in the morning in order to beat the sun and heat, but during the months with little sun and freezing temperatures, we need to wait until the plants thaw in order to harvest them. The hens have been feasting on all the tomatoes and peppers that we grade out. We loooooove being able to give the chickens such tasty treats, because they decompose it much faster than it decomposes in our compost pile, and we don’t have to move wheelbarrows of compost around! The chickens have been in our front yard this season, which is not our long term plan. This is because we are currently trying to establish a perennial pasture grass in our backfield, which will be the future home for chickens. first broke ground on this land, we used the help of a walk-behind tractor to plow furrows between our “permanent raised beds.” Five seasons later, we have 100 beds, each 75 ft x 2.5 ft and footpaths between each bed, measuring at 1.5 ft. These beds were established once and are tended and maintained by hand on a regular basis. We imagine that each bed is a living organism, an organized structure that can react, grow, and strive for balance. These beds make up the larger farm system which our food is grown in. In order to promote the vitality of each bed, we disturb the soil as little as possible. Since farming became industrialized and the use of heavy machinery became widespread, we’ve seen major erosion of topsoil and a drastic lack in the land’s ability to retain water and nutrients. Turning over the soil with tractor implements can certainly make quick work of transitioning from one crop to another, but we’ve found it to be unnecessary in our system. Our beds maintain their structure easily with solely the aid of hand tools. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6194447eb5200c17d0a10049/b2f28c48-0b10-4410-afcd-489f6bee0111/IMG_7956.jpeg Practices - TOOLS AND IMPLEMENTS Though we have a walk-behind tractor that was essential in creating our beds at the beginning of our first season, the tools we use are primarily hand tools. Now, the tractor is mostly used with its mowing implement to mow vegetable crops and cover crops. Mowing leaves the organic matter as “mulch” on top of the bed and living roots in the soil below, composting in place with the aid of microorganisms. Being so close to Lake Michigan, we have a heavy clay soil that can become compacted very easily. This is a big reason why we opted for permanent footpaths, giving us a place to stand so we do not compact our growing space. Our main tool to prevent and alleviate soil compaction is a broadfork. Its long, thin tines pierce the soil and lift it slightly - without inverting it - so that air, water, nutrients, and worms can move through the soil with greater ease. We use hori-horis, trowels, and digging forks to remove weeds from the beds, and occasionally will run an oscillating hoe through the bed if the weeds are small. For path management, we use a wheel hoe and mulch the paths with straw whenever possible. To prep our beds, we sprinkle any needed amendments on the bed top and use a wheel barrow to apply compost from our friends at Blue Ribbon Organics in Caledonia. We use a rake to spread the piles, and we’ve found that this technique is enough to prevent stratification of nutrients and is the least distributive to the soil structure and any microbial activity. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/6194447eb5200c17d0a10049/cf7278f6-c709-451f-8c10-ffd55291c77e/AC0869C7-AF02-4A22-8147-1E2D1E365A74_1_105_c.jpeg Practices - “PEST” AND “WEED” PRESSURE As organic farmers, we’re constantly confronting the juxtaposition between crops and weeds. Any time we need to get rid of weeds, they are pulled by hand or hand tools. This is very labor intensive, so we try to weed only what is necessary. It’s taken 5 years but aesthetically, we’re starting to accept (and perhaps even enjoy) the presence of some of the familiar and less problematic “weeds”. In fact, some of these plants can be highly complimentary to our vegetable crops; creating a leaf canopy to retain water during a dry period, having long tap roots that aerate the soil, or providing a medium for root exudates to feed the microbiota in the soil. In many cases, pests can do a lot more damage much quicker than an annoying weed. We try to be as preventative as we can, using crop rotation and proper planning in the off-season to anticipate and respond to the previous season’s pest pressure. When the fruits of planning are exhausted, we turn to row cover to act as a barrier from insects that land on the crops. Row cover certainly isn’t foolproof, and its questionable whether its worth the hassle of a massive piece of fabric blowing around, ripping, and getting tangled in our legs and tools. When row cover is out of the question, we hand pick pests and feed them to our chickens (like the hornworm on the right). Farming, like many lines of work, requires long days and physical labor, which can quickly deteriorate the mind and body. We have the privilege to be able to pursue what we love, but we want to be able to do it for a long time. That being said, we take seriously that sweet “work-life balance”; crushing farm tasks during the workday, and calling it quits when 5 pm rolls around. This requires setting boundaries, careful planning, and being very intentional about how we spend our time and money. We love what we do and couldn’t be more grateful to have the opportunity to do it. Feeding ourselves is one of those routines that may seem mundane but, when put into context, is arguably one of the most important human routines on the planet. The current ways in which many industrialized societies are fed disregard the needs of the people they feed, the needs of the land on which food is being grown, and the needs of the ecosystem as a whole. She believes that working with the land in a way that looks holistically at the planet and all of its biospheres is the best place to start when it comes to meeting our basic needs. Feeling a pull towards home, she farmed for another two seasons with Sam and Sara before setting off again, traveling in Central America, trekking across Spain and Portugal, and hiking solo through California on the Pacific Crest Trail. Inspired by the healing and self-awareness she found in farming, she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in mental health counseling at Marquette University, with the intention of integrating this knowledge within nature-based approaches to therapy.
