Shallots - are an allium that fits somewhere between an onion and a garlic. The bulb and skin resemble an onion, while the taste is more like a mild garlic. Shallots are a speciality crop used by restaurants and are sought after for their bold flavor that doesn’t linger. I normally don’t love eating raw onions or garlic just because of the aftertaste and let’s be honest - after breath - that it leaves, but I'm always down for a raw shallot. I like using them in salad dressings and slaws, drowned in olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette and cherry tomatoes, but they can be cooked just like any onion or garlic.
The event we held last weekend was a success! We scramble;ed to find every chair we could find in the neighborhood! More to come…everyone was engaged and wanting more. Stay tuned…
It’s definitely feeling like fall out there, and the veggies are reflecting it. We held an event at the farm this past weekend, and we got tons of compliments on our tidy field and healthy looking crops (I definitely admitted that the crew worked hard to clean up for the occasion), but truly, the field IS looking amazing right now.
So much of the health of the fall crops is determined by what happens in the spring and summer. We’ve had an awesome amount of precipitation this year, (at some points, too much) and the temperatures have been relatively mild (aside from all those days about 90). But the rain has helped our soil stay in the perfect equilibrium - just moist enough to soften the clay, but not too wet to be a sludgy mess - and the cooler temps at night with lots of heat and sun during the day are leading to fast growing fall crops.
Recipes to Try
We were expecting so many people to show up, so these mini BLT’s were gone in no time. Even the crudite platter had nothing left at the end.
